5 Signs Your Business Has Been Compromised

4 min read Updated September 11, 2026

Sign 1: Unusual account activity

Logins at odd hours, from new locations, or sudden spikes in failed login attempts can mean someone is probing your accounts — or is already inside. Monitoring catches what passwords alone cannot.

Sign 2: Sluggish or erratic systems

Malware running in the background drains resources. Sudden slowdowns, crashes, or fans spinning for no reason deserve a closer look rather than a reboot and a shrug.

Sign 3: Disabled security tools

If your antivirus, firewall, or backups suddenly turn themselves off, assume someone is clearing the way for an attack. Disabled defenses are one of the clearest red flags there is.

Sign 4: Unexpected file or password changes

Files you did not change, renamed file extensions, or passwords that suddenly no longer work are all signs that someone else may be acting on your system. Investigate immediately.

Sign 5: Strange network traffic

Large outbound data transfers or connections to unfamiliar IP addresses can mean your data is being exfiltrated. Traffic you cannot explain is traffic you should worry about.

What to do next

Isolate the affected machine from the network, change passwords from a known-clean device, preserve any logs, and call your IT team immediately. Do not try to "wait and see" — speed is what limits the damage.
